Our Story
Walking alongside my mother as she got diagnosed with and battled breast cancer was one of the hardest things my family and I ever had to do. Besides the dread and uncertainty of the disease itself, and the painful treatments, there were so many moments when we felt frustrated with how hard it was to find the information we needed to support my mom in the way she needed. Not knowing what to expect before a procedure, for example, caused uncertainty and confusion and sometimes potentially dangerous situations due to lack of communication. My family members and I spent endless hours scouring the internet for high quality, in-depth information about treatments, symptoms and side effects, trying to prepare to help my mom in any way we could. We emailed and texted information back and forth. We asked friends and neighbors who had recovered from breast cancer for any advice they could give us. We took copious notes during doctors’ visits on our iphones and sent them back and forth. And yet, there were still so many times where we felt blindsided and found ourselves saying “if we’d only known BEFORE…” The doctors and nurses who took such great care of my mom were helpful and responsive. But they also have so many patients to care for and so few hours in the day to answer questions, so we had to fill in the gaps as best we could.
We knew there had to be a better way.
Leveraging my experience in health information technology, I asked my mom:
-
What would you have wanted to know at each step along the way of your journey?
-
What little things made the experience just a little bit better for you? And what made it worse?
The result is a solution that wraps patients and their caregivers in much-needed support, getting them the information they need, exactly when they need it, and helping to bring a little more clarity to the haze that is the breast cancer patient’s journey.
